Born in Israel but considering himself Palestinian, HANY ABU-ASSAD emigrated to the Netherlands in 1981 at the age of 20. After directing his first feature film 'Het 14de kippetje' (1998) from a script by writer Arnon Grunberg, Hany went on to make a documentary, Nazareth 2000, and his second feature Rana's Wedding. His  real breakthrough, however, came with his 2006 film 'Paradise Now' which gained him international acclaim by winning the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and receiving an Oscar-nomination in the same category. His 2013 film ‘Omar’ was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Jury Prize. It also received the Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the Academy Awards.
His latest movie 'The Idol', was the first feature film to be shot Gaza in decades and tells a fictionalized version of the life of Mohammed Assaf, a wedding singer from a refugee camp in Gaza who went on to win 2013's Arab Idol singing competition.
Hany is now teaming up with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba to bring us the story of two plane crash survivors who are lost in 'The Mountain Between Us'.
