It’s a Shortcutz tradition! Every year we invite the director of the Best Film Golden Calf winner. This year we are honoured to welcome back the one and only JORAM LÜRSEN, director for BANKIER VAN VERZET, Golden Calf winner for Best Film, Best Actor (Jacob Derwig), Best Female Supporting Act (Fockeline Ouwekerk), Best Production Design (Harry Ammerlaan) and the audience award for Best Film.
Since graduating from the Dutch Film Academy in 1990, Joram Lürsen has always been able to combine quality with success. He is the most prolific Dutch director of his generation, combining working in film and TV. His films are among the most popular and well received, his TV-series rank among the best watched.
His latest film, THE RESISTANCE BANKER (BANKIER VAN VERZET, 2018), tells the true story of two brothers who bankrolled the Resistance during WO II in Holland. It earned him a record twelve nominations for the Golden Calves, the Dutch Oscars. The thriller was written by Thomas van der Ree.
With his graduation film, THE FINALS, he won the Cannon Award and the L.L. Jordaanprijs. The movie also received an honorable mention from the prestigious French film prize the César.
Lürsen’s films have often been internationally successful. His movie IN ORANGE won a Youth Oscar for its youthful star Yannick van de Velde.
Lürsen is also an experienced TV-director. Not only did he make the highly regarded thriller drama series VUURZEE (often labeled ‘the Dutch Twin Peaks’), he also directed numerous episodes of popular TV-series like ALL STARS, BAANTJER, and FLODDER.
In 2007, Lürsen directed the romantic comedy LOVE IS ALL, which went on to become the highest grossing Dutch movie of the last twenty years, with an attendance of 1,3 million. LOVE IS ALL also won the Golden Calf for Best Film and Joram himself picked up the award for Best Director.
In 2010, Joram directed the family film HET GEHEIM, followed in 2011 by his adaption of the popular Dutch children’s book DOLFJE WEERWOLFJE.

In 2013 Joram directed the TV-series VOLGENS ROBERT ('According to Robert'), written by acclaimed playwright Maria Goos. Joram also directed the thriller BLOEDLINK.
A NOBLE INTENTION (PUBLIEKE WERKEN, 2015), based on the famous novel by Thomas Rosenboom, was a luscious period film. The comedy HET VERLANGEN (2017) starred famous Dutch actress Chantal Janzen.

Becoming is a short film about the miraculous genesis of animal life. In great microscopic detail, we see the 'making of' an Alpine Newt in its transparent egg from the first cell division to hatching. A single cell is transformed into a complete, complex living organism with a beating heart and running bloodstream.
The first stages of embryonic development are roughly the same for all animals, including humans. In the film, we can observe a universal process which normally is invisible: the very beginning of an animal's life.
